Vishwanath Das (also spelled Vishwanath Dash) was indeed an Indian politician and a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement. He was born on 22nd September 1889 in Cuttack, Odisha, which was then part of British India.
Das played a significant role in the political and social movements of the time, working closely with prominent leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Madan Mohan Malaviya. He was a strong advocate for Indian independence, and he actively participated in the non-cooperation movement against British colonial rule.
In 1937, after the Government of India Act was passed, Orissa became a separate province, and Vishwanath Das became its first Chief Minister. He served in this role for a brief period, from 1937 to 1939, before resigning due to political differences with other members of the Congress party.
Das continued to work towards India’s independence and social reforms, including education and the eradication of untouchability. He was also a prolific writer, and his works include several books and essays on politics, history, and culture.
Vishwanath Das passed away on 4th June 1979, leaving behind a legacy as a committed freedom fighter and a champion of social justice.
