How to Block, Unblock, and Report Contacts on WhatsApp: A Complete Guide

Managing your interactions on WhatsApp is crucial for maintaining privacy and a positive digital environment. Whether you’re dealing with unwanted messages or suspect spam, WhatsApp offers straightforward options to block, unblock, and report contacts. This guide walks you through each process step-by-step, ensuring you can navigate these features with ease.

Blocking Contacts on WhatsApp

To Block a Contact:

  1. Open WhatsApp, then tap More options (three dots) > Settings.
  2. Navigate to Privacy > Blocked contacts.
  3. Tap Add.
  4. Search for or select the contact you wish to block.

Additional Methods to Block:

  • In a chat with the contact, tap More > Block > Block. Optionally, tap Report contact > Block to report and block.
  • Alternatively, in the contact’s chat, tap their name > Block > Block.

Blocking Unknown Phone Numbers:

  1. Open the chat with the unknown number.
  2. Tap Block. You can also report them by selecting Report contact > Block.

Note: Blocked contacts cannot call or message you, and won’t see any updates to your last seen, online status, or profile photo. Blocking doesn’t remove them from your contacts list or vice versa.

Unblock a Contact on WhatsApp

To Unblock a Contact:

  1. In WhatsApp, tap More options > Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy > Blocked contacts.
  3. Tap the contact you wish to unblock.
  4. Tap Unblock [contact name]. You’ll now be able to exchange messages, calls, and status updates again.

Additional Methods to Unblock:

  • Search for the blocked contact, tap and hold their name, then tap Unblock [contact name].
  • Open your last chat with the contact, scroll to the bottom, and tap the unblock option.

Note: Unblocking restores the ability to send and receive communications, but does not recover messages, calls, or status updates sent during the block period.

Reporting a Contact on WhatsApp

To Report a Contact:

  1. Open the chat with the contact.
  2. Tap More options > More > Report.
  3. Optionally, check the box to block the user and delete messages in the chat.
  4. Tap Report.

WhatsApp will receive the last five messages from the reported user or group, their ID, the message timestamp, and the message type without notifying them. You can also long press a single message to report an account directly.

Reporting a ‘View Once’ Photo or Video

  1. Open the ‘view once’ content.
  2. Tap More options > Report contact.

Note: For more information on ‘view once’ content, refer to WhatsApp’s support articles.
