Official Language Policy of the Union
The official language of the Union is Hindi in Devanagari script. The form of numerals to be used for the official purposes of the Union is the international form of Indian numerals {Article 343(1) of the Constitution}. But apart from Hindi, English language can also be used in official work (Section 3 of the Official Language Act).
The work of Parliament can be done in Hindi or in English. Provided that the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha or the Speaker of the Lok Sabha may, under special circumstances, allow a member of the House to address the House in his mother tongue. {Article 120 of the Constitution}
The purposes for which only Hindi is to be used, for which the use of both Hindi and English language is necessary and for which purposes English language is to be used, it is specified in the Official Languages Act 1963, Official Languages Rules 1976 and rules made thereunder from time to time. But issued by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairsprescribed by the directions.
