Optimize Comprehension in Class 10 English: Effective Pre, Active, and Post-Reading Techniques for NCERT

Breaking Down the Comprehension Process in NCERT Class 10 English, Section 3:

This section focuses on developing effective strategies for reading comprehension that students in Class 10 English can utilize for both the “First Flight” and “Footprints without Feet” textbooks. These strategies are divided into three phases:

1. Pre-reading Strategies:

  • Previewing the text:
    • Before diving into the actual reading, take a quick glance at the title, headings, subheadings, pictures, and any introductory information. This gives you a sense of the text’s structure and helps you anticipate the main ideas.
    • Read the first and last paragraphs to get a general idea of the content and ending.
  • Setting a purpose for reading:
    • Ask yourself what you want to learn from the text. Is it to understand the main character’s feelings? Identify the author’s message? Or gather information about a specific topic? Having a clear purpose keeps you focused and helps you identify relevant information.

2. Active Reading Strategies:

  • Questioning:
    • Ask yourself questions as you read, such as “Who is the narrator?” “What is the conflict?” or “What is the author trying to achieve?” This keeps your mind engaged and helps you think critically about the text.
  • Visualizing:
    • Create mental images of the scenes, characters, and events described in the text. This makes the reading experience more vivid and helps you better understand the story.
  • Connecting to the text:
    • Think about how the text relates to your own experiences, knowledge, or other texts you have read. This personalizes the reading experience and allows you to make deeper connections with the material.

3. Post-reading Strategies:

  • Summarizing:
    • Briefly rephrase the main points and ideas of the text in your own words. This tests your comprehension and helps you identify the most important information.
  • Reviewing:
    • Go back and reread any sections that you found confusing or unclear. Make sure you understand all the key points before moving on.

By employing these pre-reading, active reading, and post-reading strategies, students can significantly improve their comprehension skills and gain a deeper understanding of the texts in NCERT Class 10 English.
