The Fortune of the Goldsmith

Heading: The Fortune of the Goldsmith

Subheading: A Tale of Humility and Reward

Once upon a time, in a far-off land, there lived a king who decided to visit the villages of his realm to inquire about the well-being of his subjects. During his travels, a golden button from his shirt came loose. Concerned, he asked his minister if there was a goldsmith in the village who could craft a new button for his shirt.

In that village, there was only one goldsmith, known for his skill in crafting all kinds of jewelry. He was promptly brought before the king. The king asked, “Can you make a new button for my shirt?” The goldsmith confidently replied, “Of course, Your Majesty, it’s not a difficult task at all!” After examining another button on the king’s shirt, he crafted a new one and fitted it perfectly.

Pleased with the work, the king inquired about the payment. The goldsmith humbly declined, saying, “It was a small job, Your Majesty. After all, the gold was yours; I merely provided my labor. And what labor can one charge a king for?” The king insisted, asking how much he should pay. The goldsmith, initially thinking of asking for two rupees, reconsidered, fearing the king might think it too much for a single button and worry about how much he charged the villagers. He thought it best to leave it to the king’s discretion and said, “Whatever pleases you, Your Majesty.”

The king, understanding the goldsmith’s humility and skill, commanded his minister to reward him with two entire villages, far beyond the goldsmith’s humble expectation of mere two rupees. This act of generosity left the goldsmith astounded and grateful.

Conclusion: Trust and Satisfaction in Divine Will

The story of the goldsmith serves as a powerful reminder that when we leave our desires to a higher power, we often receive more than we could have ever asked for. It teaches us the value of humility, the importance of doing our work with sincerity, and the virtue of leaving our rewards to divine will. Just as the king rewarded the goldsmith beyond his imagination, so too does life surprise us with its bounty when we act with pure intentions and trust in the providence of the divine.

Sages and saints have always said to surrender everything to God and never ask for anything specific, for what He gives is always beyond our imagination. In life, it’s not only the wealth we accumulate that matters but also the satisfaction and contentment we find in what we have.
